Dozens suing West Virginia cardiologist for medical malpractice

A drive of less than two hours will take you from Huntington to Raleigh General, a hospital in Beckley, West Virginia. In 2008, there were 107 cardiac procedures performed at the facility. A year later, the figure had surged more than 300 percent, to 350 procedures. By 2010, the number of cardiac procedures rose to 1,745.

According to reports, the person responsible for the astronomical rise in cardiac procedures was Dr. Donald Kenneth Glaser, director of the facility's interventional cardiology unit. Plaintiffs in dozens of lawsuits against the doctor and the hospital say he routinely performed medically unnecessary cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties and stents in order boost revenues.

More than 80 lawsuits have been filed since early last year, the West Virginia Record reports.

The defendants in the cases, including Glaser, the hospital and the hospital's owners, recently argued in court that the lawsuits should not be considered mass litigation to be referred to the West Virginia Mass Litigation Panel.

Glaser left Raleigh in 2013. He was apparently offered work early last year at the Beckley VA Medical Center, but the offer was pulled after news reports surfaced that he was under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Earlier this year, a doctor who worked with Glaser for 3 years gave sworn testimony that he witnessed Glaser performing unneeded cardiac procedures while Glaser was at Raleigh General. Now based in New York, the cardiologist said he saw Glaser mischaracterizing patient chest pains in order to justify unnecessary cardiac catheterizations.

Experienced Huntington medical malpractice attorneys know that unneeded and risky medical procedures have been performed in our area. A skilled lawyer will discuss the details of your case and help you pursue damages for the harm you have suffered.
