Surgical instrument left behind in woman

Some stories of physician negligence almost defy belief. And yet the same kinds of stories happen all over, from Huntington, West Virginia to Huntington Beach, California.

The latest example of a jaw-dropping medical error happened to a woman who went into an outpatient surgical facility in April for common gynecological procedures called uterine ablation and tubal ligation.

The California mother of three hoped to recover quickly from the minor procedures, but instead felt increasingly worse in the days afterwards. "I was nauseous," she told a TV station, "had heavy cramping, heavy pain."

She went back to her doctor three times following the operation. They did a pelvic examination and diagnosed her with a severe vaginal infection. She was prescribed antibiotics, which only briefly relieved her symptoms.

One day she made a bathroom discovery which helped explain why she could not seem to recover from the minor procedures: she found a piece of metal slightly protruding. At a nearby emergency room, an X-ray revealed that a tip of a surgical instrument had been left inside her.

"I had this thing in me for 11 weeks," she said.

Both the surgeon's employer and the surgical center have refused to comment on the matter.

At some point they will have to speak to medical malpractice attorney who has been hired to protect the interests of the woman.

An experienced, skilled lawyer will fight for maximum compensation for damages to help send a message to other health care providers: be more careful with your patients. Their lives depend on you.
