Dozens received false Alzheimer's and dementia diagnoses

He was sure that concussions he had sustained in high school football were starting to take their toll. At 33 years old, he was having trouble sleeping and remembering how to tie his shoes. When he was told a memory-loss center that he had Alzheimer's disease, he began planning for a suicide that would take place when he could no longer remember the names of his young children.

Nine months after the diagnosis, he learned that the center's director didn't have a medical or psychology license. A new test confirmed that he did not have Alzheimer's. According to a recent news article, more than 50 former patients have filed medical malpractice claims against the clinic.

The memory-loss clinic is about 275 miles north of Huntington, in Toledo, Ohio. More than 50 people were falsely told that they had either dementia or Alzheimer's.

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to understand how they reacted: some quit jobs and sold off their belongings. One person took the trip of a lifetime. Another one ended his life.

The clinic was run by a couple who apparently hoped to profit by treating those wrongly diagnosed with debilitating illnesses.

The wife opened the clinic and saw patients, though her physiology degree did not qualify her to order tests or diagnose Alzheimer's. Her husband is a licensed physician, but did not see patients. Instead, he signed off on the tests his wife ordered and sometimes put his name on forms as if he was the doctor who referred patients to the clinic.

We will watch this case with interest in coming days.

We will also represent West Virginia residents who have suffered damage at the hands of negligent doctors and hospital staff.
