West Virginia interstate crash sends 8 to hospitals

If you drive about six hours northeast of Huntington, you will arrive in Berkeley County, West Virginia. That is where a recent motor vehicle accident sent eight people to area hospitals.

The early-morning crash near the Maryland state line began when a vehicle on Interstate 81 veered across the highway's median, striking and knocking loose a portion of an 18-wheeler's trailer.

Two vehicles following the big rig were unable to avoid the damaged commercial truck, a news report stated. However, the truck driver was able to safely steer his vehicle to the side of the highway.

We do not yet know what caused the first driver to steer across the interstate's median, but we do know that in many similar cases, electronic distractions play a crucial role in accidents and injuries.

The statistics on distracted driving are jarring reminders of the dangers of allowing electronics to take your eyes off of highways, streets, other vehicles and traffic signs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that more than 3,100 people were killed in crashes caused by distracted drivers in 2014. Another 431,000 drivers and passengers were injured.

The NHTSA says that during each and every daylight moment, about 660,000 drivers across America are using phones or other electronic devices while driving. Each one of them is taking their eyes and minds off of the road, even if just for a few seconds. In those seconds, they are driving blindly, trusting that no one ahead will stop suddenly or pull out onto the road unexpectedly.

Of course, every experienced driver knows that awareness of road conditions and traffic is crucial to safety. Those few seconds of inattention is when accidents are much more likely to happen.

For those injured by a distracted driver, a conversation with an attorney experienced in personal injury litigation can help make your legal options clear.
