Teens, millennials and risky driving behavior

The American Automobile Association recently released a survey about unsafe driving habits. A total of 2,511 drivers aged 16 and up participated, and the results indicated that young millennials were engaged in the riskiest driving behavior among all the age groups represented.

Distracted driving is high on the list of causes behind traffic fatalities, but young people take other risks that can be just as costly.

A few survey data points

The AAA survey showed that 88.4 percent of drivers between the ages of 19 and 24 admitted texting, speeding and running red lights. The members of this group were nearly twice as likely as the drivers in all other age groups to type, send an email or text while driving. Almost half of the 19- to 24-year-olds said they drove through a light that was turning red when they could have stopped, and 12 percent of this age group saw nothing wrong with driving 10 miles per hour over the speed limit when they were in a school zone.

A rise in fatalities

In an interesting comparison, the CDC reported that in 2013, young people 15 to 19 years of age comprised only 7 percent of the population, but they represented 11 percent of the costs related to vehicle accident injuries. Sadly, traffic fatalities rose to 35,092 across the country in 2015, which was the highest figure since 2008. The AAA survey results indicate that unsafe practices behind the wheel may be a factor in the increase in motor vehicle crashes involving young drivers.

Seeking legal help

Any victims of a crash involving an irresponsible young driver will know how disastrous unsafe driving behaviors can be. It is best to reach out to an experienced attorney who will investigate the accident fully, hold the party who caused the crash accountable and ensure that the victim is compensated appropriately for injuries.
