Trucker faces charges in deadly West Virginia interstate crash

West Virginia State Police say a truck driver who is originally from Ukraine is facing criminal charges after he allegedly drove off from the scene of a deadly crash on Interstate 77 north of Huntington.

Law enforcement officials say the 61-year-old trucker's tractor-trailer dragged beneath it a pick-up truck for more than half of a mile along the highway. The 33-year-old Kenna man driving the pick-up died of injuries sustained in the truck accident.

The wreck apparently happened near the I-77 exit for Kenna.

"It may have been one of the most heavily damaged vehicles that I have seen in my career," a West Virginia State Police sergeant told WSAZ news.

Law enforcement officials said the trucker drove for more than a half mile with the pick-up under his big rig and then drove another mile and a half after the pick-up detached from under the 18-wheeler.

"The semi truck driver was actually trying to discard evidence that was attached to his truck," the State Police officer said. He added that there was no indication that the truck driver planned to return to the scene of the crash or that he had attempted to contact authorities.

The trucker is also accused of lying to police about the log recording the amount of time he was behind the wheel of the rig.

A witness to the fatal incident said the pick-up "was on the rail and the semi was closing in on him. They were sliding and the semi kept dragging the truck."

We do not yet know why the trucker fled the scene or allegedly tried to hide evidence of the deadly collision, but we do know that truck accident injury victims and families that lose loved ones in tractor-trailer crashes can pursue full compensation for all damages with the help of a Huntington personal injury law firm.
