Should you pursue a negligence claim for a hospital fall?

During their hospital stay, as many as 20 percent of all patients in our country fall at least once, according to data collected by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In fact, more data from the collaborative health care organization Premier Inc. indicates that hospital falls comprise the largest category of reported incidents.

Falls caused by hospital negligence can a form of medical malpractice. If you were the victim of such a fall, have you considered contacting an attorney experienced with cases of this sort?

Conditions that contribute to a hospital fall

The risk of falling in the hospital increases by factors such as slippery floors, poor lighting or some kind of equipment in a room or hallway that is in the patient's way. Hospital patients are obviously in new surroundings that are far different from their own homes. They may also be weak from surgery or illness.

Older people are at risk

Older people may have vision problems, difficulty walking or lower body weakness. They can trip easily or simply lose their balance and go down. The Centers for Disease Control tell us that 25 percent of people aged 65 or older falls every year -- but less than 50 percent of these let their doctors know about it. Surprisingly, more than 800,000 people are hospitalized annually due to an injury caused by a fall. Many of these people suffer head injuries or hip fractures. In addition to possible brain injuries and broken bones, falls can have very serious consequences when they happen to patients who are on certain kinds of medications, such as blood thinners.

Seek legal advice

It is always good to know where you stand relative to a personal injury of any kind. If you suffered a fall in the hospital, reach out to an attorney experienced with medical malpractice who can tell you whether you have a case. If so, your attorney will defend your rights and see that you receive fair and just compensation for your injury.
