Police: Impaired trucker caused West Virginia crash, injuries

If you drive south for about two hours, you will come to the small town of Gilbert, West Virginia. The town has fewer than 500 residents, but is known far and wide for its ATV trails.

The town was recently the site of a crash between a truck tractor and an SUV. After the truck accident, police charged the truck driver with driving while impaired and causing serious bodily injury.

The trucker was behind the wheel of a 2003 Peterbilt on US 52 near Gilbert when his large vehicle went across the center line and smashed into a white sports utility vehicle. The two occupants of the SUV sustained severe bodily injuries, according to a Williamson Daily News report.

The two were taken to the Logan Regional Medical Center about 25 miles north of Gilbert. The newspaper was unable to get information about the type of injuries they suffered or the state of their medical conditions.

When police officers arrived at the scene of the wreck, they said that they saw the truck driver exhibit signs of intoxication. He reportedly slurred his words and was unsteady as he walked. A standardized field sobriety test provided more evidence that the man was impaired, though he apparently refused to do parts of the test.

He then admitted to the officers that he had taken several prescription drugs while driving the large truck. In fact, a blood test indicates that he tested positive for benzodiazepines (anxiety drugs that include Xanax).

In similar cases, those who are injured by impaired truck drivers can with the help of a personal injury attorney pursue compensation for damages from both the truckers and the companies that employ them.
