Man loses legs to medical malpractice

Many West Virginia residents are familiar with western Pennsylvania. A town north of Pittsburgh was recently the site of what is reported to be the largest medical malpractice verdict in that part of the state.

The $9 million price to be paid by a hospital pales in comparison to the price paid by the victim of a surgeon's negligence, however. The 52-year-old man lost the lower parts of both legs to a series of bad medical decisions that resulted in septic shock.

Back in January 2012, the man was admitted to a hospital to fix a colovesical fistula (abnormal connection between colon and bladder). Later that month, he returned for a second procedure in which the surgeon removed 6 inches of colon.

Unfortunately, two months later the man was back in the hospital, this time with severe abdominal pain. After a 12-hour wait before hospital staff informed the surgeon of the patient's condition, exploratory surgery was performed. The doctor determined that the man's colon was perforated and leaking into the abdomen.

The man's wife insisted that her husband was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. There, 7 additional surgeries were performed to drain the abdominal cavity and clear up infections.

Worse, though, was the gangrene in both feet caused by prolonged septic shock. Both legs had to be amputated mid-calf.

According to a news report, the man has since had to have a thumb amputated due to ongoing circulatory problems caused by the sepsis.

Will the money make it all better? The answer is obvious. He will never be made whole and healthy again, but the money will help him get the medical care he needs and will enable his wife to stop working two jobs; something she was forced to do since her husband became disabled.

You can discuss your situation with an experienced West Virginia medical malpractice attorney who will fight to get you the justice and compensation you need and deserve.
