Out of prison, former surgeon faces medical malpractice suits

While many prisoners celebrate the day they walk out of captivity, one former orthopedist might find life outside prison walls tougher than it was behind bars. He faces more than 200 medical malpractice lawsuits, according to recent news media reports.

His lawyers are apparently in negotiations with some of the attorneys representing medical malpractice victims with the possibility that some claims will be resolved with settlements.

The 48-year-old is accused of performing unneeded surgeries on healthy patients, as well as gross surgical errors and much more.

The former New York orthopedic surgeon might be eager to put his prison days behind him, but many of his former patients "won't be able to get on with their lives," an attorney representing about two dozen plaintiffs said.

No one knows exactly how many medical malpractice claims the man faces, but plaintiffs' attorneys estimated that the number could go as high as 240 or even 260.

He was recently released from a medium-security federal prison in Pennsylvania after serving less than three years of a four-and-a-half year sentence for health care fraud.

Former patients quoted in past news reports said he performed unnecessary operations on them, often botching the procedures and leaving them with permanent, painful injuries and often disabilities.

The former surgeon admitted in court that he was motivated mainly by greed and a desire to be admired by others.

Negligent doctors that harm patients can be held accountable by experienced medical malpractice attorneys. You can contact Huntington's Cyrus, Adkins & Walker, Attorneys at Law for more information.
