Search on for West Virginia driver who ran after hitting pedestrian

The Guyandotte River winds for more than 160 miles through West Virginia. The scenic waterway is not a fitting resting place for a human body, however.

Logan County sheriff’s deputies are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 36-year-old woman whose body was later found in the river. Officials do not yet know why the driver fled the scene, though it is known that it many similar cases, drivers flee pedestrian accidents because they were intoxicated at the time of the crash. In other cases, the drivers were speeding or distracted or similarly negligent.

Officials believe her body was in the river for five days.

Police had received a call early Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, but because of "poor water conditions" that day were unable to find her during an initial search. Her body was found that following Saturday after water levels receded and the river calmed, according to a newspaper article.

Images from surveillance cameras in the area showed a possible suspect's vehicle: a 1990s or early 2000s Ford pick-up that appears to be blue or black with white or gray trim.

Law enforcement officials say the truck should have a damaged right front end.

We don't know why a driver would hit a person and flee, leaving the injured victim to die. We do know that in many fatal pedestrian accidents, families want more than criminal punishment for the perpetrator. They want to pursue punishing financial compensation as well.
